Research interests
Demetrios Lefas is a Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng) Research Fellow (starting October) at the Whittle Laboratory and a Fellow of Gonville & Caius College. As a Principal Investigator, he performs research at the interface between aerodynamics and vibrations, working on practical problems relating to aeroelastic instabilities found in jet engines.
Aeroelastic instabilities in jet engines, that occur when a blade’s vibration gets amplified by changes in its aerodynamics, currently limit their design and compromise engine efficiency. It is critical for the successful development of new ultra-efficient engines that such aeroelastic problems are solved fast. Demetrios’ research aims to understand the driving mechanisms behind these aeroelastic instabilities to facilitate the development of new technology at the pace required for a net-zero carbon transition while keeping flying accessible to all.
As part of his research, he directly collaborates with Rolls-Royce and has been appointed as a visiting Research Fellow at Imperial College London.
